Bangkok Design Week returns once again, this year under the theme "Design Up+Rising", covering seven creative districts across Bangkok. The event showcases design concepts that address challenges and drive sustainable urban development through the power of creativity.

This year, We are excited to contribute to Design Up+Rising with The Gamble House: A Home by Luck or Design?, a project designed by The Collective Studio. Our role in bringing this concept to life involved the production and installation of the Lucky Home essential element of the exhibition.

From material selection and structural design to on-site installation, our process was driven by precision, attention to detail, and a commitment to craftsmanship. With a team of skilled professionals, we ensured that every aspect of the project met the highest standards, allowing the concept to be fully realized and resonate with visitors in the most impactful way.

Curious about our production process? Lets take a closer look!

From concept to creation, The Gamble House: A Home by Luck or Design? explores the connection between belief and luck in shaping one's living space, with the Lucky Home serving as the key element in determining fate.

The Gamble House is a design project by The Collective Studio that invites visitors to explore the power of positive change and adaptability in the face of challenges. It demonstrates that design is not only a tool for solving tangible problems but also a medium for reflecting the tension between faith and fate versus logical design in shaping one's living space.

At its core, the installation poses a thought-provoking question: "What if we relied on belief rather than logic to create our dream home?" This idea is brought to life through the Lucky Home booth, symbolizing life's uncertainties when we choose to depend on luck and superstition rather than a structured, rational approach to design.

Smile Exhibit  started the production of the Lucky Home.

The Lucky Home is designed to let visitors engage in a fun, interactive experience by pulling a lever to randomly generate their dream home. This concept aligns with The Gamble House's exploration of fate versus design. To bring this vision to life, our production process is divided into two main stages:

1. The structure of the Lucky Home is divided into three main components for production: the top section, the middle section, and the base.

  •  The top section of the Lucky Home

For the top section of the Lucky Home booth, we used curved HMR wood, finished with an industrial-grade 'silver-gray' paint. The sign is designed as a lightbox with a Lucky Home sticker, surrounded by red Neon Flex for added prominence. This design ensures that the text is clearly visible, even at night, enhancing the booths visibility and impact.

  • The middle section of the Lucky Home is dedicated to the mechanism of the spinning wheel. We use a gear and magnet system instead of electronic components to operate the wheel.

This was the most challenging part of the project, as we had to devise a way to spin and stop the wheel without using electricity or electronic systems, which could be difficult to maintain. Instead, we opted for a mechanical system with gears to drive the wheel and used magnets to stop it. The mechanism works as follows: when the player pulls the lever, it simulates the motion of pedaling a bicycle forward and is stopped by the magnet attached to the wheel.

  • The base of the Lucky Home

We used curved HMR wood for the base, finished with an industrial-grade 'silver-gray' paint. The font, symbolizing luck as the determinant of your home, and the icons are designed as stickers and placed on the lightbox. This ensures that the text is clearly visible to players, even at night.

2. The side poles of the Lucky Home for scanning the QR code to view the fortune prediction.

For the side poles of the Lucky Home  used to scan the QR code for the fortune prediction, we adapted PVC pipes to the desired shape before spray painting them in silver-gray to match the overall design of the Lucky Home booth. The production process includes the following steps:

1. Cutting the PVC pipes - We selected pipes of the appropriate size to fit the proportions of the booth, then cut and assembled them to achieve the desired shape.

2. Shaping into pole structure -  Heat was applied to certain areas to create dimension and ensure the structure was strong enough for installation.

3. Spray painting in silver-gray - Industrial-grade paint was used to give the surface a smooth, aesthetically pleasing finish that blends well with the main booth.
Installing onto the booth The structure was securely attached to ensure it could support practical use and seamlessly integrate into the booths design.
Using PVC pipes to create components of the booth allowed for flexible design, a lightweight structure, and maintained durability.

Smile Exhibit offers comprehensive services, including both production and installation.

After completing the production of all three sections of the Lucky Home booth, we assembled them together, using screws at various points to ensure the booth's structure is strong and stable. Next, we installed the lighting system and tested the booth's functionality to ensure all features worked smoothly. We also conducted a thorough inspection to check every detail before delivering the final product to the client.
